A hard-worked century from Khaya Zondo underpinned the Dolphins’ first-day offering of 285-6 in the Sunfoil match against the Lions.
Having elected to bat in Pietermaritzburg, the Dolphins were looking good at 95-1. But then came a wobble, when they lost Divan van Wyk (34) and Vaughn van Jaarsveld (53) within two balls from Beuran Hendricks, on loan from the Cobras, and Sibonelo Makhanya, to stand at 104-4.
Zondo settled in with Morne van Wyk (39) for a stand of 102 for the fifth wicket and after the loss of Keshav Maharaj (4), he found a more sturdy partner in Calvin Savage, who contributed 20 to the close-of-play stand of 55.
Zondo’s eighth first-class hundred came off 236 balls, with 16 fours, which is as good an indication of patience as you can get: 64 runs in his total of 105 coming from boundaries.
Dwaine Pretorius ended top of the bowlers, with 3-38, while Hendricks, after his double strike, went for 2-66.
