Western Province captain Kyle Verreynne has sent a strong message to his team as the 4-Day Series resumes on Wednesday after a five-week break.
Salieg Nackerdien’s charges will travel to Gqeberha to face the EP Warriors at St George’s Park.
“I think the message is pretty clear,” said Verreynne. “We’ve won the One-Day Cup, the T20 competition hasn’t started yet and we’re still in with a shot for the 4-Day trophy.
“We obviously want to win three trophies this season. It’s a very, very tall ask, but we’re more than halfway through the season now and we’re still sitting in a position where we can make the final and win the 4-Day competition.
“The motivation from us is there. The message is quite simple, let’s just keep doing what we’ve been doing, focus on having fun and enjoying ourselves.”
Province are fifth on the 4-Day Series log with 72.5 points, with two league-stage games remaining.
“We’ve been really good at Newlands this season, but our away form, especially in the four-day competition, hasn’t probably been where it needs to be,” Verreynne added. “This week’s away game will be a really good opportunity for us to right that wrong.
“It’s pretty much a must-win two games for us, so it’s important that we go to Port Elizabeth and put on a good display.”
WP will be missing some key players in David Bedingham, Mihlali Mpongwana, Eddie Moore and Dane Paterson, who are all on national duty with the Proteas. However, Verreynne is confident the team has what it takes to win.
“I think as we saw in the One-Day Cup, it wasn’t really an individual tournament. There were young guys that stood up throughout. And even in this 4-Day competition so far, we’ve had young guys stand up and do well.
“Guys coming into the team, making their debuts and performing straight away. It’s always difficult when you’re missing key players. They’re obviously away on national duty, I feel like our squad depth is really good.
“The guys that are here are fully focused and ready to go out there and perform.
“I think from a confidence point of view, we feel in a really good space. And we’ve got what it takes to push for results in the next few games.”
