David Wiese picked up two wickets as the Royal Challengers Bangalore thrashed the Delhi Daredevils by 10 wickets at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium on Sunday.
While Wiese impressed, he certainly wasn’t the only one to fire with the ball, as World Cup player of the tournament Mitchell Starc and Varun Aaron also picked up key wickets as they dismantled the Daredevils for just 95. With the pressure largely off them, Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle then chased down the total in just under 11 overs.
JP Duminy’s Daredevils were sent into bat, and Shreyas Iyer was sent packing for a golden duck which set the tone for Kohli’s Royal Challengers. Mayank Agarwal and Duminy then provided the best stand of their innings, but it was just 34 runs, as Wiese removed Proteas teammate Duminy for 13.
Agarwal scored 27 and Kedar Jadhav attempted to give his side something to work with as he made 33, but the fourth highest score of their innings was a paltry four, as they were skittled for 95.
While it was a far from daunting task, Gayle and Kohli strode out still needing to do a job, and they did it with distinction, as they maintained 10 runs an over throughout. Gayle provided the fireworks with four sixes in his innings of 62, Kohli supported the show with 35, to secure the crushing win.
AB de Villiers was due to come in at three, but his services weren’t required. Imran Tahir, the leading wicket-taker of the tournament, couldn’t match the brilliant form he’s been in as he went for 20 off his two overs.
Both sides have performed inconsistently this season. They now have three victories and three defeats apiece.
The earlier match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Rajasthan Royals was called off due to rain.
