JP Duminy charted new territory when he became the first to overtly apologise to the public back home following the Proteas’ World Cup woes. DANIEL GALLAN reports.
The Proteas have endured a World Cup campaign blighted by injuries and poor performances, which has seen the side eliminated from semi-final contention despite two pool-stage games still remaining.
On the eve of the Proteas’ penultimate game against Sri Lanka, Duminy opened up about the disappointment of the World Cup outcome.
‘We obviously want to apologise to the public and the South African fans for letting them down. You know when you represent your country it is always a proud moment and you understand that you represent 50 million people, that is a proud moment in itself.
‘When you put in performances like that, you know, you in a way almost feel ashamed of that. But we know it’s not all lost. I believe this team will come back stronger. There will be a lot of introspection around where we have gone wrong. But I believe we will come back stronger.’
