Waqar Younis’ reverse swing was too much for South Africa’s batsmen to handle on this day, 30 years ago, in Durban.
In the first match of a Tri-Series that also involved the West Indies, South Africa (yet to be nicknamed the Proteas) restricted Pakistan to 208-6 at Kingsmead.
The hosts were cruising to victory at 165-2 in the 42nd over when Waqar demolished the stumps of Andrew Hudson (93).
South Africa would lose their last eight wickets for 33 runs to suffer a 10-run defeat.
Waqar finished with figures of 5-25 in 10 overs.
