The Pakistan cricket team arrived in the UK on Sunday evening inside a bio-secure bubble in preparation of their upcoming Test and T20I series against England.
Like the West Indies two weeks ago, Pakistan touched down at Manchester Airport more than a month in advance of their opening clash with Joe Root’s men to undergo all the necessary testing and health protocols laid out for a safe playing environment.
Pakistan were forced to trim their initial 29-man group down to only 20 after ten players tested positive for Covid-19 last week. But, fortunately, six of those players have since returned negative tests with Kashif Bhatti, Haris Rauf, Haider Ali and Imran Khan missing out on the tour due to second positive tests.
Mohammad Hafeez, Wahab Riaz, Fakhar Zaman, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Rizwan and Mohammad Hasnain will now undergo a third round of testing this week before they will be allowed to travel to the UK and meet up with the rest of their team.
‘This was a challenging and unprecedented process that we have conducted and I am pleased that following a second round of testing, we are able to confirm 20 players and 11 player support personnel will travel to Manchester on Sunday,’ said Pakistan Cricket Board CEO Wasim Khan.
‘With the Test series being played first in August, [head coach] Misbah [ul-Haq] is satisfied with the group of players that are travelling on Sunday as the focus will be on red-ball preparation. Misbah understands that flexibility and adaptability will be needed with his training and practice schedule while operating under various guidelines.’
