AB de Villiers’ century during the first Test of South Africa’s tour of Australia in 2008-09 carved the way for a memorable victory in Perth.
The visitors got off to the perfect start in their three-match series despite 74 run deficit after both sides had batted once. A second-innings ton from Graeme Smith helped the South Africans to 172-2 with half centuries from Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis further aiding the Proteas’ cause.
De Villiers’ knock – he ended on 106 not out – though was key as South African chased down 414 with six wickets in hand.
The Proteas would go on to win the series 2-1.
