Dean Elgar and Kyle Verreynne steadied the Proteas’ first innings batting display before the latter fell just before tea to leave South Africa on 125-4 against the West Indies.
Earlier in the day, Aiden Markram, Keegan Petersen and Rassie van der Dussen had all been dismissed cheaply before Verreynne and Elgar combined for a near-century stand.
Verreynne was ultimately caught behind when he was on 27, but crucially for the Proteas, captain Elgar was still not out on 53.
