Acting director of cricket Corrie van Zyl has given Proteas interim team director Enoch Nkwe clear and predictable instruction, ahead of the September and October tour of India.
Nkwe has effectively succeeded former head coach Ottis Gibson for the three T20Is and as many Tests in India.
A full-time appointment for the new role, introduced after Gibson and team manager doctor Mohammed Moosajee’s positions were dissolved, will be made later this year.
‘The mandate for the national team and Enoch as team director is obviously to win and be successful in India,’ said Van Zyl.
‘Very important is that the Test series is the start, for us, of the Test Championship, so the mandate can’t be different than getting off to a good start.
‘The appointment of Enoch as interim team director is because CSA believes that he has got the characteristics that can do exactly that.’
The Proteas have contested six Test series in India, but won only one. That was 19 years ago, when the late Hansie Cronje’s team welcomed a 2-0 sweep. Their last Test series in India was in late 2015, which yielded 3-0 defeat.
They will take three new Test caps to India this time – Dolphins spinner Senuran Muthasamy, Knights wicketkeeper Rudi Second and Warriors fast bowler Anrich Nortje.
