Dané van Niekerk wants to play for the Proteas Women again having signed a contract with Western Province.
Van Niekerk quit international cricket 16 months ago after being left out of the Proteas squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup in South Africa for fitness reasons (she failed a 2km time trial by 18 seconds).
The 31-year-old met with CSA director of cricket Enoch Nkwe during South Africa’s recent tour of India where she was a commentator.
“If things go according to plan, she will be available for inclusion in the Proteas team,” Nkwe told Rapport newspaper.
“If she performs at provincial level and meets the national team requirements, she will be considered for the Proteas.
“She and I had a friendly chat in India. It’s good to know she wants to return to international cricket.”
WP Women’s coach Claire Terblanche says Van Niekerk has already been given an off-season fitness programme.
“We are going to give her all the support to get to a fitness level and compete for a place in the national team.
“What she has to do now is to convince the national selectors with runs and wickets for WP, and time on the playing field.
“Then she will join us in mid-August for our off-season programme. Our first games are on 12 and 13 October against Free State.”
