Proteas Women captain Dane van Niekerk and teammate Marizanne Kapp have finally tied the knot.
Kapp announced the joyful union on social media after a long engagement while they concentrated on their cricket. The pair, who recently returned home following an ODI and T20 tour of the United Kingdom, celebrated their wedding with close friends, family and Proteas teammates on Saturday.
There will be little time for a relaxing honeymoon though, as they fly out to join the Surrey Stars for the women’s T20 League in England, which starts 22 July, before they start preparing for the Women’s T20 World Championships in November.
They are also teammates in the Women’s Big Bash League, where they have played crucial roles in taking the Sydney Sixers to back-to-back Women’s Big Bash titles. In three seasons, Kapp has taken 40 wickets, while Van Niekerk – who played for the Renegades in WBBL|01 before jumping ship to the Sixers – has snared 36 in two summers.
The two made their international debuts within two days of each other during the 2009 Women’s World Cup, with Van Niekerk capped for the first time aged just 16 against West Indies 8 March, while Kapp joined her 10 March against Australia.
The South Africans aren’t the only current international and WBBL teammates to have tied the knot – New Zealand and Melbourne Renegades stars Amy Satterthwaite and Lea Tahuhu married in March last year.
