Proteas seamer Dane Paterson and all-rounder Robbie Frylinck were among the six wildcard picks named for the 2019 Mzansi Super League on Wednesday.
The draft for this year’s MSL happened earlier this month, but each franchise was afforded one more selection based on performances in the recently concluded Provincial T20 Cup (formerly Africa T20 Cup).
Western Province fast bowler Thando Ntini and Easterns leg-spinner Dyllan Matthews were chosen by the Paarl Rocks and Nelson Mandela Bay Giants, respectively. Matthews was in the Giants squad for the 2018 MSL, but played just one match.
‘Thank you so much for this lovely opportunity, it’s a dream come true,” Ntini wrote on social media.
‘I would like to dedicate this special moment to my family, coaches, close friends and all the people at Western Province for making me the person and cricketer I am today.
‘The journey only gets better from here. And a special mention to Siya Sibiya [South Africa U19 assistant coach], who has always believed and pushed me to be the better version of myself.’
The Tshwane Spartans and Cape Town Blitz recruited Northerns batsman Donvan Ferreira and Easterns seamer Khwezi Gumede.
The 2019 MSL will start on 8 November and end with 16 December’s final. The Stars are the defending champions, after beating the Blitz in last year’s inaugural final.
