The International Cricket Council has cleared former Dolphins and Lions batsman Devon Conway to play for New Zealand.

Conway played franchise cricket in South Africa as recently as 2017, but has since forged a successful career with Wellington in New Zealand.

The talented left-hander struck a first-class 327 not out against Canterbury in October 2019 and earlier this year hit List A tons against Central Districts and Northern Districts.

‘It’s really awesome to have that solid date, 28 August 2020, as a reminder to say that you’re pretty close. In saying that, it doesn’t guarantee selection. So I am pretty pretty happy to hear about that, but you’ve just got to keep working hard and hopefully get an opportunity to break into that Black Caps team, which is pretty awesome at the moment – you’ve got world-class players there, and it won’t be easy to get into that team,’ said Conway.

The 28-year-old, like most other cricketers, is unable to play professionally until the ongoing coronavirus pandemic is curbed. International and the bulk of domestic cricket have been suspended as a preventative measure against the spread of the virus.

‘Little bit mixed feelings at the moment. Obviously really happy to hear the news about my eligibility, but then again, in saying that, with regard to what’s happening at the moment throughout the world, just puts everything in perspective,’ he added.
