England will play their first ODI since winning the Cricket World Cup in July last year when they face a new-look Proteas outfit at Newlands on Tuesday.
The three-match series is presenting the opportunity for both camps to have a look at new players, with England also opting for a revised rotation system that has given Ben Stokes and Jos Butler a rest.
But, the World Champions still pose some very threatening players and explosive hitters that are arguably the best in white-ball cricket at the moment.
Jason Roy
The Durban-born Roy sits with a strike rate of 107 and is certainly one of the cleanest hitters in the England team, which really says a lot. The 29-year-old opener can truly send it long and holds the record for the highest individual score by an English cricketer following his heroic 180 off 151 deliveries against Australia in Melbourne in 2018. More importantly, Roy is one of six players in the current England squad, who toured South Africa back in 2016 for five ODIs.

He is also currently 10th on the ICC ODI batting rankings, but with 84 ODIs to his name and an average of 42, Roy’s capabilities with the bat could spell great danger for the inexperienced Proteas bowling attack if they don’t hit the right length.
Eoin Morgan
Captain Fantastic of England’s rise in white-ball cricket over the past five years. Morgan is a superb leader on and off the field but can do his fair share of damage with the bat as well. He captained the England team in a previous series against the Proteas in South Africa, which the hosts won 3-2. He will therefore be quite determined to build on his team’s World Cup success with a first-ever ODI series win on South African soil.
The 33-year-old Morgan has a lot of experience with 233 ODIs under the belt. The middle-order batsman has a total of 46 half-centuries and 13 centuries, and usually accelerates the score towards the end of an innings. His contributions at the latter stages has definitely helped England earn the right as one of the highest-scoring teams in ODI cricket at the moment.

Adil Rashid
Rashid is a much different and more developed player than when he toured with England in South Africa in 2016. Back then, the leg-spinner had a history of being in and out the ODI set-up but in the past four years, former England coach Trevor Bayliss restored trust in Rashid’s abilities, which made him an integral part of the team that lifted the World Cup at Lord’s last year. A possible 100th ODI is on the cards for Rashid at Newlands on Tuesday, should he get selected, and he boasts with a total of 143 wickets.
Together with Moeen Ali, the pair have become a prolific spin-bowling combination for Morgan and they could have a real influence on the series with the conditions in Cape Town and Kingsmead in Durban on Friday, set to favour them.
