Interim team director Enoch Nkwe is determined to ‘create the right environment’ as the Proteas prepare for a challenging tour of India later this year.
Nkwe has effectively succeeded former head coach Ottis Gibson for the three T20Is and as many Tests in India.
A full-time appointment for the new role, introduced after Gibson and team manager doctor Mohammed Moosajee’s positions were dissolved, will be made later this year.
‘I don’t feel it is a suicide mission in India. As a coach I strongly believe that every challenge is an opportunity. As management we need to create the right environment as soon as possible,’ said Nkwe.
‘I will take full responsibility for how things unfold in India, but I like to create the environment where each coach has a say, learns and grows.’
Nkwe coached the Lions to the 4-Day Franchise Series title earlier this year. Late last year, he was at the helm of the Jozi Stars’ title-winning campaign in the inaugural Mzansi Super League.
Earlier this month, he was working with West Indian batsmen and other international stars at the Vancouver Knights in the Global T20 Canada.
‘I have just been in Canada working with some of the best T20 players in the world. Just to manage Gayle is a massive task in itself,’ he added.
‘Being someone that is always open to new experiences and learning, the last year has been massive in my coaching career and as a person.’
