Imran Tahir’s inclusion against Sri Lanka has been confirmed, while David Miller has passed his fitness test.
A pair of left hamstrings threatened to upset the Proteas’ Champions Trophy hopes. Tahir and Miller both felt tightness at varying stages of the England series, with Tahir missing the last two matches. Tahir got through the penultimate training session on Thursday problem-free, and while Miller said he didn’t experience any pain, he still had one more fitness test to get through.
Not only has Tahir been cleared, but Miller passed another fitness test too, meaning the Proteas have a clean bill of health going into their opening Group B clash. Furthermore, AB De Villiers removed any doubts that Keshav Maharaj would be picked ahead of him, despite enjoying a successful debut series against the English.
‘Imran is fit and our No 1 spin bowler, and Kesh understands his role when it comes to that,’ De Villiers told the media at the pre-match press conference at the Oval.
‘There might be a time when we use a different strategy, but tomorrow Imran is certainly our number one. He’s fit and ready to go, so you should see his name on the team sheet.’
