Faf du Plessis recorded another important half century, while Imran Tahir starred with the ball, to help the Chennai Super Kings beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 69 runs in Mumbai.
After choosing to bat, Du Plessis (54) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (33) once again got CSK off to a great start in the powerplay (51-0). Gaikwad was the first to fall and thereafter du Plessis made another IPL 50, the former Proteas skipper is in fine form.
CSK’s innings was moving along solidly but not rapidly. That was until Ravi Jadeja entered the scene and produced a blistering 62 off 28 balls to inject some much needed runs in the back end of the CSK innings. They ended on a very competitive 191-4. Harshal Patel (3-51) of RCB got the most wickets but was expensive.
Devdutt Padikkal (34) got RCB’s chase off to a flyer but that was quickly halted as RCB’s top and middle-order crumbled. Big guns Virat Kohli (8) and AB de Villiers (4) fell cheaply. For CSK, all-rounder Jadeja (3-13) was the star of the innings picking up three wickets and he also enacted a run-out.
On a South African front, Tahir was excellent in his first outing in this season’s IPL. He picked up 2-16 in his four overs for CSK. The superb spin duo of Jadeja and Tahir squeezed RCB in their chase and they ended timidly on 122-9.
CSK outplayed the form side in the IPL and are the first team to beat RCB this season. They join RCB at the top of the table with four wins.
