SA U19 star Kwena Maphaka helped the Central Gauteng Lions claim a Super Over win against Western Province at the Wanderers on Sunday.
Batting first after winning the toss, Province ended on 127-9 after 20 overs with Lutho Sipamla (2-20) and Codi Yusuf (2-28) claiming two wickets apiece.
David Bedingham (37) top-scored for the visitors, who were seeking a fourth consecutive win in this season’s T20 Challenge.
Chasing a rain-revised target of 52 in seven overs, the Lions could only get to 51-3, forcing the match into a one-over shootout.
Wayne Parnell took the ball for the visitors and managed to restrict Ryan Rickelton (one not out) and Evan Jones (eight not out) to just 10.
Maphaka then ensured Kyle Verreynne (five not out) and George Linde (four not out) could only get nine.
Meanwhile, the EP Warriors maintained their winning start to the T20 Challenge with a 32-run victory on the DLS method against the Boland Rocks in Gqeberha.
The Warriors posted 165-6 after winning the toss. Jiveshan Pillay was the top-scorer with 45*, while Patrick Kruger made 29*.
Chasing a rain-revised target in 17 overs, the visitors were bowled out for 117 in 16.4 overs.
Clyde Fortuin and Christiaan Jonker each scored 33, while Beyers Swanepoel took 4-16 and Patrick Kruger 3-20.
The log-leading Warriors moved to 19 points, two clear of the Lions.
Sunday’s other match, between the KZN Dolphins and North West Dragons, ended in a no result in Durban.
The Dragons were 79-4 after 13.2 overs when the rain arrived.
