The Sunrisers Eastern Cape edged MI Cape Town by four runs in a thrilling SA20 match on Saturday.
It went down to the wire with MI Cape Town requiring 18 runs off the final over, bowled by paceman Daniel Worrall.
The Australian held his nerve when he dismissed Delano Potgieter with the first ball, courtesy of a good diving catch by Patrick Kruger at fine leg.
Crucially, it kept MI Cape Town captain Kieron Pollard at the non-striker’s end.
George Linde made an immediate impression with a six and four to reduce the target to eight off three balls.
But Worrall only conceded a further three singles, including having Pollard run out off the penultimate delivery to send the Sunrisers faithful into raptures.
HIGHLIGHTS: Sunrisers Eastern Cape vs MI Cape Town (SA20)
Earlier, Tom Abell and captain Aiden Markram struck half-centuries to lift the Sunrisers to to 175-6.
Abell has been in sparkling form at St George’s Park, with his 60 off 44 balls his second half-century at home of the season.
Markram provided the impetus with 54 off 32 balls before Tristan Stubbs clubbed 23 off 13.
Nuwan Thushara (2-32) and Kagiso Rabada (2-26) were the most successful bowlers for MI Cape Town.
The visitors’ reply begun in the worst possible fashion when Rassie van der Dussen was run out within the first powerplay.
There were contributions down the order from Liam Livingstone (26), Sam Curran (30), Pollard (30) and Dewald Brevis (26), but the team just did not have enough firepower to get them that much-needed victory.
The victory saw the third-placed Sunrisers move up to 19 points on the log, while MI Cape Town ended the day in fifth position on nine points.
