Former and present Proteas cricketers are involved in the 2019 edition of the Global T20 Canada. How are batsman JP Duminy and countrymen faring?
Three South African cricketers are among the tournament’s top 10 run-scorers. Duminy is in fifth position, followed by sixth-placed Rassie van der Dussen and seventh-placed Heinrich Klaasen.
Duminy has dominated for the Winnipeg Hawks en route to 164 runs in five innings, including 77 not out in the victory over the Vancouver Knights and an unbeaten 48 in defeat to the Edmonton Royals.
Cricket South Africa’s reigning International Newcomer of the Year, Van der Dussen has collected 160 runs in just three innings for the Knights. Two half-centuries – one unbeaten – has inflated his tournament average to 80. All-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo is also with the Knights, but wasn’t required with bat or ball for late July’s no result with the Montreal Tigers.
Klaasen endured a lean stretch of scores for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, but has since struck some form for the Toronto Nationals. His wicketkeeping to a Nationals attack – spearheaded by New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan and Nepalese leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane – has been solid.
Proteas Test captain Faf du Plessis is leading the Edmonton Royals, while former Cape Cobras spinner Michael Rippon is also with the Vancouver franchise.
