South Africa U19 suffered a 45-run defeat to India in their opening match of the U19 World Cup in Guyana on Saturday.
India turned the tide on their opponents in the final 15 overs, with South Africa at one stage 138-3 in pursuit of 233.
Hunting for a fifth U19 title, Yash Dhull and Vicky Ostwal played key roles to ensure their campaign got off to the perfect start.
Dhull made 82 to steer his side towards a defendable score. Matthew Boast was South Africa’s best bowler, taking 3-40, while Aphiwe Mnyanda and Dewald Brevis each picked up two wickets.
South Africa responded well with the bat, with Brevis making 65 at No 3, but collapsed to 187 all out.
Ostwal ended with figures of 5-28 in a match-turning display.
