• SA U19 learn hard lesson

The SA U19 side was bowled out for 197 on day one of the first Youth Test at Thiruvananthapuram in India.

The visitors’ innings lasted 67.5 overs, with skipper Matthew Montgomery (57 off 109 balls) and Bryce Parsons (58 off 121 balls) starring with the bat after the visitors found themselves 39-3 in the 12th over.

Andile Mokgakane (20) and Bonga Makhakha (31) added some additional stability to the innings, but it was not enough for the visitors to build a substantial first innings score in the unfamiliar conditions against a strong Indian bowling attack.

Hrithik Shokeen (4-50), Anshul Kamboj (2-28) and Sabir Khan (2-38) shared the bulk of the wickets for the Indian side.

Lifa Ntanzi struck in the first over of India’s reply, bowling Varun Nayanar for a three-ball duck, but Divyaansh Saxena (44 not out), Vathsal Sharma (23) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (24) took the hosts t0 95-2, before Parsons had Jaiswal caught and bowled in the last over of the day.

Parsons (1-1), Ntanzi (1-32) and Marco Jansen (1-6) will look to strike early on day two to restrict the Indian batsmen, and to keep the match on level terms going into the second innings.
