The updated list of schools that have produced SA Schools cricketers following the announcement of the 2016 team on December 21.
In total, nine schools featured in the 2016 SA Schools team, with Reddam House (Constantia) adding their name to the prestigious list. Having already starred for the Lions in the Sunfoil Series, it came as no surprise when St Stithians’ pupil Wiaan Mulder was named as captain of the team – in the process earning his second call-up to the SA Schools side following his 2015 selection.
This kept St Stithians at 12th spot on the list, whilst Grey High School (Port Elizabeth) cemented their spot at No 1 with Matthew Breetzke joining Lutho Sipamla, with the latter earning his second cap. Grey College remain in fifth with Christopher Schreuder becoming the Bloemfontein school’s 29th player as he joined 2015 SA Schools cap and teammate Raynard van Tonder.
Rondebosch Boys’ High school meanwhile leapfrogged Maritzburg College into sixth position with the selection of Jesse Christensen.
Ruan de Swardt’s selection made him just the 13th young man to ever play for both the SA Schools cricket and rugby teams. It also took his school, Affies, one clear of a pack of schools on eight SA Schools cap, to 25th spot on the list.
Hudson Park’s duo of Akhona Mnyaka and Sinethemba Qeshile pushed the East London school well up the list to the mid-30s.
Keenan Smith meanwhile became just the third pupil from HTS Daniel Pienaar to represent the SA Schools side as he followed in the footsteps of former Protea quick Mornantau Hayward and Dewald Senekal – a former First-Class seamer and current eighthman for French Top 14 rugby side Bayonne.
As previously mentioned, Reddam House Constantia added their name to the list of schools to have produced an SA Schools cricketer when Michael Cohen was named in the squad.
