South Africa A crashed to a 257-run defeat to the England Lions in the one-off unofficial Test in Canterbury on Saturday.
Beginning the day in a precarious position at 29-4, the visitors were in need of a rear-guard performance from the remaining batsmen. Things began brightly as Temba Bavuma and Heinrich Klaasen led their team past fifty. Just when the pair were beginning to give their side a glimmer of hope, Sam Curran bowled Bavuma for 33.
Wiaan Mulder departed shortly therafter to leave SA A’s resistance in tatters. When Heinrich Klaasen (43) fell to Jamie Porter with the score on 100, the SA A race was all but run.
Dane Piedt did his best to deny the England Lions victory for as long as possible, adding 31 runs to the score. He and Beuran Hendricks occupied the crease for seven overs before the latter was removed by Curran for 12.
Piedt continued to fight on and saw SA A into the 140s before his defiant knock came to an end.
The final nail in the SA A coffin was the dismissal of Duanne Olivier by Dan Lawrence.
SA A had lost their final six wicket for just 125 runs, folding for 154.
