Batsman Jason Roy and seamers Olly Stone and Lewis Gregory have been named in the England squad for next week’s Test against Ireland.
Roy and Stone have played limited-overs cricket for England, but are uncapped in Test-match competition. This is Gregory’s first inclusion at international level.
Fast bowler Mark Wood was not considered due to a side strain sustained during Sunday’s World Cup final victory over New Zealand, with wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler and all-rounder Ben Stokes being rested. Seamer Jofra Archer, too, was excluded.
‘Archer, who has yet to make his England debut in Test cricket, will have a period of rest before being considered for selection during the Ashes Test series. He will have a short break in Barbados before returning to the United Kingdom later this month,’ read a statement from the England and Wales Cricket Board.
‘After playing a pivotal role in England’s World Cup triumph, Archer has been awarded an increment contract by the ECB for the next 12 months.’
Lord’s will host England and Ireland’s one-off Test from Wednesday. A week later, the English will commence a five-Test Ashes series against Australia.
