England became the first nation to score 500,000 Test runs and captain Joe Root will go down in history as the player to have registered the landmark.
The rain-interrupted first day of the fourth Test at the Wanderers ended with the visitors on 192-4. The day was marred by a foul-mouthed tirade by star all-rounder Ben Stokes as Root notched up some history.
England brought up their 500,000th Test run when Root turned for a single with the score on 186-4.
They took 1,022 Tests to do so with Australia next (432,706 in 830 Tests) and India third (273,518 in 540).
