The first round of matches in the St David’s time cricket festival produced three wins and one draw, seven centuries and some good spin bowling in conditions that definitely favoured the batsmen, writes THEO GARRUN.
There was also some good captaincy, from Neo Felane, skipper of the CSA Talent Acceleration Programme (TAP) side in particular. He enforced the follow-on against St Alban’s 134 ahead, and ended up having to chase 94 in 34 overs. They got there with two wickets to spare in an exciting contest.
King Edward needed 142 to win in just over an hour against Maritzburg College and made it quite comfortably, with nine wickets in hand, thanks to an opening stand of 90 between Jason Bracher (50) and Joshua Streak (52 not out).
The game between St David’s and St Andrew’s was called off with St Andrew’s 68 without loss, chasing 250 in a high-scoring encounter which saw three centuries and three half-centuries scored.
King Edward’s Henrigh Pieterse resumed on 94 not out in the morning against Martizburg College and didn’t take long to reach his century. He then opened up and was eventually out for 190 off just 105 balls, with 15 fours and six sixes. There was one other century on day two, to add to the five from day one. Corne Viljoen of St Andrew’s made 102 in their drawn match with the hosts.
