Needing 245 to win, South Africa were looking good at 130-2 in the 30th over before opener Laura Wolvaardt was dismissed for 83 off 95 balls.
While captain Suné Luus went on to top score for her side with 86 off 98 balls and received good support from Marizanne Kapp (31 off 39), the Proteas lost wickets at crucial moments of the game and finished on 242-7.
Earlier, India posted 244-9 thanks to opener Yastika Bhatia (58 off 78) and No 5 batter Harmanpreet Kaur (103 off 114).
South Africa’s final warm-up clash is against England at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln on Tuesday, with their first World Cup match against Bangladesh to take place at University Oval in Dunedin on Saturday.
