The Proteas will earn approximately R57-million (US $4-million) if they triumph in the 2019 World Cup final in the United Kingdom.
Defeat in the final would yield half as much – and a semi-final exit about R11.5-million.
They will be awarded around R570,000 for each round-robin fixture victory – and almost R1.4-million if unable to advance beyond the league stage.
‘The upcoming ICC men’s World Cup will see the winners of the 10-team tournament earn a purse of US $4-million, the highest prize money to date, along with the trophy that they will lift at Lord’s on 14 July,’ read Friday’s statement from the International Cricket Council.
‘The total prize pot of US $10-million will see the runners-up assured of US $2-million, and the losing semi-finalists US $800,000 each at the end of the 46-day tournament being played across 11 venues from 30 May.
‘There are prizes for each league match won, in what promises to be a competitive tournament with the world’s best playing each other in a round-robin format.’
South Africa have not won a World Cup in seven attempts, losing semi-finals in 1992, 1999, 2007 and 2015. In 1996 and 2011 they were defeated in the quarter-finals – and 2003 yielded a group stage exit.
Former Proteas captain Graeme Smith and Shaun Pollock, meanwhile, have been named in the ICC’s commentary panel for the World Cup. The panel also includes Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, Pakistan’s Wasim Akram, New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum, Australia’s Michael Clarke, England’s Michael Atherton and others.
