Paul Harris says the Proteas must pick Faf du Plessis if they want to win a T20 World Cup.
The 38-year-old Du Plessis is the leading run-scorer in this year’s tournament, with 631 in 12 matches at an average of 57.36 and a strike rate of 154.27.
The former Proteas spinner said it was not just Du Plessis’ run-scoring ability, but the pace at which he scored them, that made him so valuable to a team.
“He reads conditions masterfully and can slow down if he has to.”
Former Proteas pace bowler Roger Telemachus is another Faf fan.
“He is one of South Africa’s best. He is fit and his kind of experience is invaluable. And look at how many sixes he has hit in the IPL this year – 32 – the most of all. He belongs in the SA squad.”

However, another ex-SA spinner, current EP Warriors coach Robin Peterson, asked where Du Plessis would slot into the Proteas XI.
“Who are you going to leave out if you choose Faf? Look at the top order. You have Reeza Hendricks, who is on a great run, and Quinton de Kock, who is a match winner. Rilee Rossouw is erratic, but he bats fast and can swing a game in the blink of an eye.”
The next T20 World Cup will take place in June 2024 in the West Indies and the USA.
