CSA CEO Pholetsi Moseki says “it’s a concern” that only one black African player is in the Proteas’ 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup.
With former captain Temba Bavuma being axed, Kagiso Rabada is the only black African representative, with six players of colour in total – the lowest number in a Proteas squad for an ICC event since 2016.
Moseki told News24 that CSA had hoped the domestic cricket quota system would “create enough of a pool” of black African players for the Proteas.
“That’s there to ensure that by the time one gets to the national team, they won’t be questioned as a quota player.
“If there aren’t enough black players raising their hands at domestic level, there won’t be enough to get through to the national team.
“It’s a concern that we’re taking a team to the World Cup with only one black African player and in conjunction with the director of cricket [Enoch Nkwe], there were cricket reasons.”
OPINION: End of an error as Bavuma axed
Moseki confirmed that Walter wasn’t required to select a specific number of players of colour for the T20 World Cup.
“The Proteas’ [transformation] targets aren’t based on the numbers they send to tournaments, but the numbers are based on how they average over a season.”
