• ‘Proteas needed to get a lead’

What the SuperSport pundits had to say after the second day of the first Test between India and South Africa in Mohali.

Ashwell Prince: ‘South Africa needed a couple of partnerships in their first innings. They needed to get a lead, but lost wickets at crucial stages of the innings which set us back. It’s going to be tough from here on in. India came out and they knew that they had to be positive. We have young, inexperienced spinners and India put them under pressure. Unfortunately we didn’t have the control of line and length like in the first innings.

‘I don’t think Dale Steyn not being available under these conditions was a massive factor. What has been a big factor is India’s approach, not allowing our bowlers to settle. We need a big session for every session for the rest of the Test to have a chance of winning it.’

HD Ackerman: ‘South Africa will be disappointed with that batting performance. They should have batted past India and have some sort of lead. They are better players than that. We can’t expect too much from Dean Elgar, he is a part timer and not used to bowing long spells. The other two needs to shine and do a job.

‘The Proteas need an enormous session on Saturday morning. At least five wickets for little runs. If the session is shared or India take it, I think South Africa are done.’

Eric Simons: ‘Our bowlers didn’t create enough pressure. If we have to chase anything above 250 we are going to struggle.’
