SACricketmag.co.za looks back at memorable Proteas Test moments in England ahead of the three-match series which starts next week.
In 1994, South Africa toured England for the first time since 1965, opening a three-match Test series at Lord’s. The month before, Nelson Mandela had become the first president of a democratic South Africa and the Rainbow Nation had adopted a bright, new colourful flag.
The visitors, captained by Kepler Wessels, batted first at the Home of Cricket after winning the toss, with Gary Kirsten’s 72, Wessels’ 105 and 41 from tailender Craig Matthews getting them to 357 all out.
Fast bowler Allan Donald then took 5-74 as England were dismissed for 180, and when South Africa declared their second innings closed on 278-8, the hosts needed an improbable 456 runs to win.
They never came close, being skittled for 99 with Brian McMillan and Matthews taking three wickets each.
Champagne was sprayed and the new flag waved as South Africa celebrated a famous 356-run win on their Lord’s balcony.
The Test series would be shared 1-1 after a draw at Headingley and England’s eight-wicket win at The Oval.
