SACricketmag.co.za looks back at memorable Proteas Test moments in England ahead of the three-match series which starts next week.
Allan Donald versus Michael Atherton was one of the biggest rivalries in Test cricket. At Trent Bridge in 1998, the confrontation was taken to the next level (watch the video below).
‘White Lightning’ bowled a brutal, unrelenting spell from around the wicket, and should have had Atherton given caught behind off the glove when he had made 27 (there was no review system then).
Soon after, wicketkeeper Mark Boucher dropped Nasser Hussain, and Donald was apoplectic. He took all of his rage out on Atherton in a colossal struggle, but couldn’t break the batsman’s will, and a day later England won by eight wickets to level the series 2-2, with ‘Athers’ still there on 98*.
To further rub salt in South Africa’s wounds, the hosts also won the deciding fifth Test at Headingley by 23 runs.
