The uncapped Simon Harmer has been added to South Africa’s squad for the remainder of the three-Test series against the West Indies.
Off-spinner Harmer has clinched 221 wickets in 56 first-class fixtures at an average of 32.85 – and represented South Africa A earlier this year.
Spinning all-rounder Robin Peterson has been sidelined by a hurt finger, while Dane Piedt recently returned from a shoulder injury. Leg-spinner Imran Tahir, meanwhile, has been retained in the 15-man squad.
‘We would like to have the option of a second spinner in the squad,’ said Cricket South Africa selection convener Andrew Hudson.
The Proteas sport a one-nil series lead, after an innings and 220-run victory in Centurion and draw in Port Elizabeth. The third and final Test will get underway at Newlands in Cape Town on 2 January 2015.
