Proteas batting coach JP Duminy says “there is no running away” from the situation they currently find themselves in.
South Africa were dismissed for 106 and 134 in back-to-back ODI defeats to Afghanistan in Sharjah this week, and now face the prospect of a humiliating 3-0 series whitewash.
In the first ODI, the Proteas slumped to 36-7 before Wiaan Mulder’s fighting half-century helped get them past three figures, while in the second ODI they collapsed from 73-0, losing 10 wickets for 61 runs.
“We find ourselves in a position where we’re coming up against one of the best spinners in the world [Rashid Khan, who took 5-19] and, at times, guys found themselves in tricky situations where they didn’t pick him,” Duminy told the media on Saturday.
“When you’re indecisive in your movements, then that’s where you can be caught off guard, and that’s where we find ourselves.
“There is no running away from a situation like this,” the former Proteas batsman added. “We were well below par in both games. We have to turn the mirror on ourselves and ask how we are going to get better.”
While the Proteas are missing experienced batsmen Heinrich Klaassen and David Miller, Duminy wouldn’t use that as an excuse.
“Yes, we find ourselves in a bit of a developmental growth phase, however, that doesn’t exclude the idea of trying to win games for South Africa.”
The third ODI takes place on Sunday at 2pm.
