The Twitter debate that emerged after Herschelle Gibbs made controversial statements about Faf du Plessis’ comments about AB de Villiers’ Test future.
There has been ongoing speculation whether De Villiers will play Test cricket again, and after the Proteas’ 3-1 drubbing in England, continuous questions raise doubt whether spectators will ever see the ODI captain in whites again.
De Villiers, 33, has played 106 Tests for South Africa and scored at an average of 50.46, including 21 centuries and 39 half-centuries.
Former Proteas batsman Gibbs took to twitter in response to comments made by Du Plessis stating that ‘AB has earned the right to do whatever he wants to.’

Kallis achieved more than ab ever will but he kept on playing and never disrespected the team and the game.remember that

Has nothing to with administrators..that’s the national captain speaking! Did smith ever say kallis could do that? and he achieved more

Former Proteas batsman and Cobras coach, Prince, retweeted in agreement with his former teammate.
Ridiculous statement @hershybru just wondering at which point then @amlahash will be allowed to do what he wants. Soon it’s free for all.???? https://t.co/UtzYmi2daz

He, Smith did recently say AB could do whatever he wants to. There must be a tipping point where players become bigger than the Nation.???? https://t.co/NxULmKtEGy

Former Proteas spinner Paul Harris also jumped in on the action.
As ex players why not pick up the phone and call him instead of having a go on Twitter. #justathought

@paulharris12 Didn’t hear you say that when both Biff and Faf hung Vern out to dry in public did I? Some #proteafire they’ve got going there https://t.co/Eupnge82aO

O my word Ash….why always looking for a fight. We were all team mates once. There are better ways of going about it than Twitter. Surely.

Kolpak signee Simon Harmer responded to Prince’s tweet and he hit back at Harmer:
Someone needs to get the chip off @ashyp_5‘s shoulder…

Oh wow! Love it when true colors come out. In case you didn’t realize, it’s 2017, everyone’s entitled to an opinion. But we understand…. https://t.co/L5fZJ1zifk

@SimonHarmerRSA just wondering why yourself, Rilee, Abbo etc didn’t sign as overseas players? ????
— Ashwell Prince (@ashyp_5) August 11, 2017
Surely if you or anyone else “should” be in Proteas starting line up, a county would sign you as an overseas player, like Elgar etc. ????
— Ashwell Prince (@ashyp_5) August 11, 2017
This isn’t about anyone “else”. I was under no illusion that I’d play international cricket again… like I said, same boat as you.
