Proteas all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius impressed with the bat, but couldn’t prevent the Lions from falling to a nine-wicket defeat in Wednesday’s CSA T20 Challenge fixture against the Warriors at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.
Pretorius’ 48 not out, which featured a sextet of fours and duo of sixes, powered the Lions to a final total of 144 for six. Opener Reeza Hendricks, meanwhile, weighed in with a complementary 29.
In reply, the Warriors relished a 107-run partnership between openers Gihahn Cloete and Matthew Breetze. Cloete struck 54 to Breetzke’s 72 not out. They were key in ensuring triumph with 33 deliveries to spare.
Pretorius was named in South Africa’s squad for the 2019 World Cup earlier this year, while Hendricks was overlooked despite a burgeoning international career, and a superb stretch of form for the Jozi Stars in the inaugural Mzansi Super League late last year.
Wednesday’s other CSA T20 Challenge fixtures saw the Cape Cobras overcome the Titans at Boland Park in Paarl despite another failure from opener Hashim Amla. The Knights and Dolphins, meanwhile, shared a washout at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.
Thursday will see the Cobras host the Lions at Newlands in Cape Town, while the Dolphins will visit the Warriors at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth.
