Nicholas Pooran will succeed the retired Kieron Pollard as the West Indies’ limited-overs skipper.
The 34-year-old Pollard retired from international cricket last month.
Pooran led the side in Pollard’s absence during last year’s T20I series win over Australia.
“I am following the footsteps of several giants of the game who have created an amazing legacy for West Indies cricket,” Pooran (26) said in a Cricket West Indies statement.
“To be named captain is indeed the highlight of my career so far and I want to drive the team forward to accomplish great things on the field for our fans and loyal supporters.”
Wicketkeeper Pooran, also a destructive batsman, is currently playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.
Pooran’s first fixture in the role is expected to be three ODIs in the Netherlands later this month.
