There were many fine moments on day three of the third Test against Sri Lanka, but the catch by Faf du Plessis stands out as the Play of the Day.
Apart from being a magnificently athletic effort, it sent a powerful message to the Sri Lankans: nothing is getting through us, and nothing you can do can stop us. you could almost hear their hearts breaking and their resistance crumbling.
The Sri Lankans, having been forced to follow on 295 behind, were hanging in at 87 for three when Duanne Olivier put one down short, outside off. Mathews flashed at it and it took the top edge, screaming its way over the slips to the boundary. Du Plessis leaped high and plucked the ball out of the sky. For Olivier, it was four runs less and one wicket more. Thanks, captain.
Special mention goes to Quinton de Kock for his great dive to dismiss Kaushal Silva and to JP Duminy for his sprint and superb take of a ball coming over his shoulder to send Upal Tharanga back to the hut.
