West Indian cricketer Dwayne Smith scored 62 runs off 36 to lead Guyana to victory against St Kitts in the Caribbean Premier League.
The Barbados-born Guyana batsman helped his team chase down St Kitts’ score of 164. Smith opened the batting with New Zealander Martin Guptill and the pair got on with things from the first ball.
In the second over Smith hit Samuel Badree for a four and a six off consecutive balls. He lofted the ball over mid-wicket for four, and produced a beautiful straight shot over Badree’s head for six. From there on, Smith dealt mostly in boundaries.
Thisara Perera was on the receiving end of a daring Smith shot in the 5th over. Perera mistimed his slower ball and Smith whacked it over the deep mid-wicket boundary. The very next over it was Carlos Braithwaite’s turn. He bowled a back of the length ball at hip height and Smith hit a huge six over square leg.
In the tenth over Badree was sent flying over the boundary on two occasions. The very first ball of the over Badree bowled a ball too short, and Smith hit it to his favourite spot – over deep mid-wicket for six. And four balls later he produced yet another catch for the fans sitting behind the deep mid-wicket fielder.
Smith was dismissed in the following over when Krishmar Santokie perfectly timed his slow ball – fuller on off-stump. Smith tried to dispatch it over cover, but was caught by Faf du Plessis. Smith scored three fours and five sixes in his innings and had a strike rate of 172.22.
