Head coach Mark Boucher is all but banking on a star-studded seam attack succeeding during the 2019 Mzansi Super League.
The Spartans retained the young Lutho Sipamla and Lungi Ngidi prior to the MSL player draft earlier this month and later purchased former Proteas pace ace Morne Morkel. They will be accompanied by England fast bowler Tom Curran, who is the franchise’s new international marquee player.
‘We knew what we wanted especially at SuperSport Park, where the bounce and pace are going to be very effective, so before the actual draft we retained Lutho and Lungi. We’ve also got Curran and we had first pick, so we got Morne,’ said Boucher.
‘That gives us an international attack. We’re very happy with it, whether they can all play together at the same time. We’re not too sure because of injury and all of that, which is why I am biting my tongue over their fitness. But this is certainly an attack that on their night, they can roll through any team.’
The Spartans, too, have recruited all-rounders Wiaan Mulder, Corbin Bosch and Roelof van der Merwe. The 21-year-old Mulder has played one Test and 10 ODIs since 2017’s debut and Van der Merwe is a dual international, having represented the Proteas and Netherlands.
‘I think what we missed last season was maybe finishers and middle-order batsmen. This time we made sure we got a couple of guys that can do that job. It’s a more balanced squad and we’re happy with what we’ve got,’ concluded Boucher.
