CSA director of national teams Enoch Nkwe says Dewald Brevis remains in Proteas selection contention despite missing out on a national contract.
The 21-year-old’s name was missing from the list of CSA contracted players for the 2025-26 season, with 18 national contracts and two hybrid contracts awarded.
Brevis helped MI Cape Town win their maiden SA20 title earlier this year by scoring 291 runs at an average of 48.50 and a strike rate of 184.17.
He was as impressive for the Northerns Titans, with 398 runs in the One-Day Cup at an average of 66.33 and 547 in the 4-Day Series at 49.72.
“Two years ago Dewald got an international opportunity and then things didn’t quite work out for him,” Nkwe told Rapport, referring to Brevis’ two T20I appearances against Australia at Kingsmead in 2023, in which he made five and nought.
“There is little doubt that if he keeps playing like he is now, he will step onto the field for the Proteas again. He has been very impressive at domestic level and it is good that he has hit the reset button and is performing.
“There will undoubtedly be more opportunities for him to secure his place in the Proteas team. One focus will be to get him to the level where he can play consistently for the SA team.”
