Frederico Carava took seven wickets for Mozambique but still ended on the losing side.
In the second semi-final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup Qualifier Africa Division Two at Potchefstroom, the Mozambique U19s bowled Sierra Leone U19 out for 167 in 33.5 overs, with Carava taking seven wickets in an incredible spell of bowling. Five of his victims were bowled, while the other two were trapped leg before. Four of his victims were out without scoring, while a fifth Sierra Leone batsman succumbed to the bowling of Jose Bulele (2-39) for a duck.
Carava took the wickets of all five top-order batsmen to leave Sierra Leone’s innings in tatters, first at 10-4 and then 31-5, before a stand of 91 for the sixth wicket between Osman Sankoh (51) and Aruna Kainessie (40) rescued their team from total embarrassment.
Carava finished with figures of 6.5-1-33-7 (econ 4.82) after an incredible spell of bowling, but his teammates couldn’t handle the Sierra Leone bowlers as they crumbled to 96 all out in 44.5 overs, Haroun Kamara taking 3-32 and James Tommy 3-15, the latter at an economy rate of just 1.50 runs per over.
In the earlier semi-final, Nigeria beat Tanzania by 35 runs after Nigeria were dismissed for 169 in 46.2 overs. Batting at No 8, Segun Ogundipe top-scored with 62 off 68 balls, with Salimini Saidi, Dhrumit Mehta and Mohamed Issa each picking up three wickets.
In response, Tanzania could muster only 134 in 43.2 overs, opener Gokul Das playing a lone hand in scoring 61 off 104 balls before being the eighth wicket to fall with the score on 126. Isaac Danladi claimed the prized wicket of Das, finishing with three wickets for just eight runs.
Peter Aho was the destroyer-in-chief for Nigeria, capturing four Tanzania wickets for 37 runs off his 10 overs.
On Tuesday, 28 August, Mozambique will play Tanzania in the third-place playoff in Potchefstroom, while Sierra Leone and Nigeria will contest the final at the same time.
