Lungi Ngidi recorded remarkable figures of 5-19 after lunch, while Anrich Nortje finished with four wickets as the Proteas bundled out the West Indies for just 97 in their first innings on Thursday.
Ngidi was in a class of his own as he seized control of proceedings after the lunch interval, with Nortje having taken three wickets early on to get the ball rolling in the first innings.
Nortje added one more scalp to finish with 4-35, but the second session belonged entirely to Ngidi.
At the start of the South African innings, captain Dean Elgar fell for a duck in the first over, but Aiden Markram and debutant Keegan Petersen saw them to tea on 30-1.
South Africa XI: 1 Aiden Markram, 2 Dean Elgar (c), 3 Keegan Petersen, 4 Rassie van der Dussen, 5 Kyle Verreynne, 6 Quinton de Kock (wk), 7 Wiaan Mulder, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Lungi Ngidi, 11 Anrich Nortje.
