Proteas selection convener Victor Mpitsang says he is “disappointed” with Tabraiz Shamsi for suggesting he wasn’t backed at the T20 World Cup.
Shamsi made just two appearances at the T20 World Cup – against Bangladesh and Pakistan – and was not selected for the Proteas’ disastrous final group match against the Netherlands, with Keshav Maharaj the sole spinner.
During Sunday’s final between England and Pakistan, Shamsi referred to Adil Rashid’s excellent spell for England when tweeting: “Adil Rashid had only 2 wickets up until this final Played every game. Was assured of his place every game. Was backed every game …now we can all see the result of that backing he received over the course of the tournament. Might win them the WORLD CUP TROPHY with this spell.”
“I was disappointed to hear that from Shammo, particularly because I was on tour with him,” Mpitsang said on Monday after the Proteas Test squad announcement.
“If there were issues, he was more than welcome to have a chat with me. My door is always open if there are issues. It’s even more disappointing when you have me and the coach present there to have a conversation.
“At the end of the day, when the team was selected and the attack specifically, it was best suited for the conditons on the day,” he added.
“It was nothing more than a case of horses-for-courses. I’m very disappointed to hear about this.”
