The Proteas have a crucial day ahead of them, as they look to clean up the tail quickly to stand any chance of pulling off a result.
Usman Khawaja put on the type of display so desperately lacking from the Australians in this series, as his 138 not out has given his side a healthy 48-run lead over the Proteas with four first-innings wickets still in hand.
The tourists fought back well in the final session to take three quick wickets, but Khawaja, with the help of Mitchell Starc (16 not out) helped them pull away once more.
Kyle Abbott has been outstanding so far, and he’ll need to put in another good shift with a fired up Kagiso Rabada to limit the advatnage the Australians already have. Tabraiz Shamsi looked threatening in the evening session, and will hope to get more turn from the pitch than day two offered up, as he looks for that elusive maiden Test wicket.
