Chris Morris and Duanne Olivier have been included in the Proteas squad for the remaining two Tests against Australia.
There was no place for Dale Steyn, who has not played a game of competitive cricket since injuring his heel during the New Year’s Test against India at Newlands in Cape Town.
And with fast bowler Kagiso Rabada’s participation in the third Test hanging in the balance, Cricket South Africa have chosen to add to the bowling resources.
‘Circumstances have forced us to name a large squad at this stage so that we can cover all possible options,’ said convener of selectors Linda Zondi.
‘We have retained the 15 players who produced an excellent performance to level the Test series in Port Elizabeth.
‘Olivier was the pick of our bowlers for South Africa A in their tour match against Australia while Morris has been in excellent form in domestic cricket, taking four wickets in an innings and making more than 150 runs, including a century, for the Titans in the Sunfoil Series against the log-leading Warriors,’ said Zondi.
Olivier last played Test cricket against Bangladesh at the start of the summer, while Morris hasn’t played a Test match since July 2017 in England.
Despite the call-ups, Morne Morkel is expected to come into the side should Rabada’s suspension for making contact with Australia captain Steve Smith be upheld.
