Kwena Maphaka will make his Test debut against Pakistan at Newlands, while opener Tony de Zorzi has been ruled out.
Fast bowler Maphaka – who has two ODI and five T20I caps – replaces veteran Dane Paterson.
At 18 years and 271 days old, Maphaka will become South Africa’s youngest Test player (spinner Paul Adams made his debut at the age of 18 years and 340 days in 1995).
De Zorzi has a left thigh strain and is rested as a precaution. Ryan Rickelton will move up the order to open with Aiden Markram, with fit-again all-rounder Wiaan Mulder set to bat at No 3.
Spinner Keshav Maharaj also comes into the side at the expense of pace bowler Corbin Bosch.
Proteas XI – Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Tristan Stubbs, Temba Bavuma, David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Kwena Maphaka.
