Suné Luus and Marizanne Kapp scored centuries as the Proteas claimed a 127-run victory in the first women’s ODI against Pakistan in Karachi on Friday.
Luus made 107* off 129 balls – her first international century – and Kapp a 105-ball 100 as the Proteas posted 292-4.
Career-best figures from Nadine de Klerk (3-33) and Nonkululeko Mlaba (3-39) then helped bowl Pakistan out for 165.
The Proteas won the toss and elected to bat first in the sweltering heat at the National Stadium, with openers Tazmin Brits (17) and Laura Wolvaardt (17) making an aggressive start.
Pakistan then delivered two blows within a span of five balls as Nashra Sandhu trapped Brits lbw before Umm-e-Hani’s spin got the better of Wolvaardt who was caught by Sandhu in the inner ring.
Despite a mini-rebuild by Luus and Lara Goodall (15), Aliya Riaz made an instant impact with ball in hand to get rid of the latter and help Pakistan pick up three wickets in the powerplay.
At 64-3, Kapp joined Luus at the crease. The pair, with over 230 ODI caps between them, brought up three figures and their 50-run partnership in the 22nd over.
Luus was the first to reach her half-century, before Kapp followed suit as South Africa reached 163-3 at the end of the 30th over.
Kapp and Luus began to accelerate at the crease, with both running effectively between the wickets and dispatching bad balls to the boundary en route to their centuries.
Kapp reached her second career century – both against Pakistan – before being caught in the deep off the bowling of Sandhu to bring to an end to the fourth-wicket partnership of 183 runs.
Luus then raised her bat for a long-awaited maiden ODI hundred, having combining well with Nadine de Klerk (29*).
Sandhu finished with figures of 2-50 in 10 overs.
The Proteas made early inroads into the Pakistan batting lineup. Seamer, Ayabonga Khaka made the initial breakthrough to dismiss Shawaal Zulfiqar (seven) before De Klerk sent Bismah Maroof (10) and Sidra Ameen (19) back to the change room to leave the hosts on 38-3 in the 12th over.
Mlaba struck in quick succession to dismiss Muneeba Ali (20) and Nida Dar (11), and while Aliya Riaz and Sidra Nawaz (18) produced a 42-run partnership, the wickets began to fall once again.
Two run outs, a third wicket for both Mlaba and De Klerk, as well as the final scalp of the game from Delmi Tucker secured the Proteas’ first win in Pakistan.
Riaz was left stranded on 49* off 58 balls.
The second ODI will take place on Monday.
